Memorandum
of Understanding
A
presentation given by Ms. Barbara Christmas on Tech High at the Committee
of the Whole prior to the State Board Meeting at 1:00 p.m. as follows:
The Tech High Foundation
was established to create a high tech charter high school supporting
a mission to integrate rigorous academic standards and technical training
in order to improve student achievement and prepare students for success
in postsecondary education and the workforce. The charter petition for
Tech High was approved by the Atlanta Public School System in July of
2003 and by the Georgia Department of Education in August 2003 to operate
starting August 2004. One of the primary objectives of the Tech High
Foundation is to provide a statewide replicable model of seamless education
built on a partnership between Tech High and the DTAE technical college
system.
The purpose of a Memorandum
of Understanding between the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult
Education and the Tech High Foundation is to collaboratively explore
the options available in providing secondary students enrolled in high-demand
occupations such as health care and information technology. These opportunities
should not only provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary
for successful transition from a secondary environment into meaningful
and productive employment and/or postsecondary education and beyond
but also provide students with a high school diploma as well as postsecondary
technical college credit enabling successful access into the job market.
Upon a motion by Mr. Chapman,
second by Mr. Rice, the Board approved to authorize the Commissioner
to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding, as presented, between the
Department of Technical and Adult Education and the Tech High Foundation
to collaboratively explore the options available in providing secondary
students enrolled in the Tech High with postsecondary technical education
programming opportunities in high-demand occupations such as health
care and information technology.
