DET 123 - Preventative Maintenance I

Course Description

Introduces preventative maintenance procedures pertaining to medium/heavyduty trucks and heavy equipment.  Topics include:  engine systems, and cab & hood areas.

ENGINE SYSTEMS

Engine

Check engine operation; record idle and governed rpm

 

 

 

 

Inspect vibration damper

 

 

 

 

Inspect belts, tensioners, and pulleys

 

 

 

 

Check engine oil level; check engine for oil, coolant, and fuel leaks (engine off)

 

 

 

 

Inspect engine mounts for looseness and deterioration

 

 

 

 

Check engine for oil, coolant, air, and fuel leaks (engine running)

 

 

 

 

Check electrical wiring, routing, and hold-down clamps

 

 

 

Fuel System

Check fuel tanks, mountings, lines, and caps

 

 

 

 

Inspect throttle linkages and return springs

 

 

 

 

Replace fuel filter(s); prime and bleed fuel system

 

 

 

Air Induction and Exhaust System

Check exhaust system mountings for looseness and damage

 

 

 

 

Check engine exhaust system for leaks, restrictions, and damage

 

 

 

 

Check air induction system:  piping, charge air cooler, hoses, clamps, and mountings; check for air restrictions and leaks

 

 

 

 

Inspect turbocharger for leaks; check mountings and connections

 

 

 

 

Inspect engine/exhaust brake

 

 

 

Cooling System

Check operation of fan clutch

 

 

 

 

Inspect radiator and mountings

 

 

 

 

Inspect fan assembly and shroud

 

 

 

 

Pressure test cooling system and radiator cap

 

 

 

 

Inspect coolant hoses and clamps

 

 

 

 

Inspect coolant recovery system

 

 

 

 

Check coolant for contamination; determine coolant conditioner (additive package) concentration and protection level (freeze point)

 

 

 

 

Service coolant filter/conditioner

 

 

 

Lubrication System

Change engine oil and filters; visually check oil for coolant or fuel contamination

 

 

 

 

Take an engine oil sample

 

 

 

Gasoline Engine Emission Control Systems

Inspect positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve and system components

 

 

 

 

Inspect emission control systems to include exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), secondary air injection (AIR), air inlet temperature control, early fuel evaporation (EFE), and fuel evaporation systems

 

 

 

CAB AND HOOD AREAS

Identify instruments and controls

 

 

 

 

Inspect key condition and operation of ignition switch

 

 

 

 

Check warning lamps and/or alarms

 

 

 

 

Check instruments; record oil pressure and voltage

 

 

 

 

Check hand throttle, power take off (PTO), and manual engine shut down operation

 

 

 

 

Check air conditioning (A/C), heater, and defroster operation

 

 

 

 

Check operation of all accessories

 

 

 

Safety Equipment

Check operation of electric air horns and back-up warning devices

 

 

 

 

Check condition and documentation of safety flares, spare fuses, triangles, fire extinguisher and all required decals

 

 

 

 

Inspect seat belts and sleeper restraints

 

 

 

 

Inspect wiper blades and arms

 

 

 

Hardware

Check wiper and washer operation

 

 

 

 

Inspect windshield glass for cracks or discoloration; check sun visor

 

 

 

 

Check seat condition, operation, and mounting

 

 

 

 

Check door glass and window operation

 

 

 

 

Inspect steps and grab handles

 

 

 

 

Inspect mirror mountings, brackets, and glass

 

 

 

 

Record all observed physical damage

 

 

 

 

Lubricate all grease fittings

 

 

 

 

Inspect and lubricate door and hood hinges, latches, strikers, and linkages, and cables

 

 

 

 

Inspect tilt cab mountings, hinges, latches, linkages and cables, and ride height

 

 

 

 

Inspect tilt cab hydraulic cylinders for leakage

 

 

 

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Inspect A/C condenser and lines for condition and visible leaks; check mountings

 

 

 

 

Inspect A/C compressor and lines for condition and visible leaks; check mountings
