Course Description

A continuation of DET 123.  Introduces preventative maintenance procedures pertaining to medium/heavyduty trucks and heavy equipment.  Topics include:  electrical & electronic systems and frame & chassis systems.

Battery and Starting Systems

Engage starter; check for unusual noises, starter drag, and starting difficulty

Check all exterior lamps, lenses, and reflectors; check headlamp alignment

Air Brakes

Inspect coupling air lines, holders, and gladhands

 

 

 

 

Check brake chambers and air lines for secure mountings and damage

 

 

 

 

Service desiccant pack in air drier

 

 

 

 

Inspect and record front and rear brake lining/pad condition and thickness

 

 

 

 

Inspect condition of front and rear brake drums/rotors

 

 

 

 

Check operation of front and rear brake manual slack adjusters; adjust as needed

 

 

 

 

Check operation and adjustment of front and rear brake automatic slack adjusters

 

 

 

 

Lubricate all grease fittings

 

 

 

Hydraulic Brakes

Check master cylinder fluid level and condition

 

 

 

 

Inspect brake lines, fittings, flexible hoses, and valves for leaks and damage

 

 

 

 

Check parking brake operation, inspect parking brake application and holding devices

 

 

 

 

Check operation of hydraulic system; pedal travel, pedal effort, residual (holding) pressure

 

 

 

 

Inspect wheel cylinders/calipers for leakage and damage

 

 

 

 

Inspect power brake booster(s), hoses, and check/control valves

 

 

 

 

Inspect and record front and rear brake lining/pad condition and thickness

 

 

 

 

Inspect condition of front and rear brake drums/rotors

 

 

 

 

Check drum brake adjustment; adjust as needed

 

 

 

Drive Train

Check operation of clutch and clutch brake

 

 

 

 

Check clutch linkage for looseness or binding

 

 

 

 

Check clutch adjustment

 

 

 

 

Check transmission(s) case, seals, filter, and cooler for cracks and leaks

 

 

 

 

Inspect transmissions(s) breather(s)

 

 

 

 

Inspect transmissions(s) mounts

 

 

 

 

Check transmission(s) oil level and condition

 

 

 

 

Inspect U-joints, yokes, drive lines, and center bearings for looseness, damage, and proper phasing

 

 

 

 

Inspect axle housing(s) for cracks and lube leaks

 

 

 

 

Inspect axle breather(s)

 

 

 

 

Lubricate all grease fittings

 

 

 

 

Check drive axle(s) oil level and condition

 

 

 

 

Change drive axle(s) lube and filter; check magnetic plugs

 

 

 

 

Check two-speed axle unit; check magnetic plugs

 

 

 

Suspension and Steering Systems

Check steering wheel operation for free play or binding

 

 

 

 

Check power steering pump and hoses for leaks and mounting; check fluid level

 

 

 

 

Change power steering fluid and filter

 

 

 

 

Inspect steering gear for leaks and mounting

 

 

 

 

Inspect steering shaft U-joints, pinch bolts, splines, pitman arm-to-steering sector shaft, tie rod ends, and linkage assist power steering cylinders

 

 

 

 

Check king pin wear

 

 

 

 

Check front and rear wheel bearings for looseness and noise

 

 

 

 

Check oil level and condition in all non-drive hubs; check for leaks

 

 

 

 

Remove and inspect front and rear wheel bearings; reassemble and adjust

 

 

 

 

Inspect front and rear springs, hangers, shackles, spring U-bolts, and insulators

 

 

 

 

Inspect shock absorbers for leaks and mounting

 

 

 

 

Inspect air suspension springs, mounts, hoses, valves, linkage, and fittings for leaks and damage

 

 

 

 

Check and record suspension ride height

 

 

 

 

Lubricate all grease fittings

 

 

 

Tires and Wheels

Inspect tires for irregular wear patterns and tread direction

 

 

 

 

Inspect tires for cuts and sidewall damage

 

 

 

 

Inspect valve caps

 

 

 

 

Measure and record tread depth

 

 

 

 

Check and record air pressure

 

 

 

 

Check for loose lugs and/or slipped wheels

 

 

 

 

Inspect wheels and spacers for cracks or damage

 

 

 

 

Check tire matching (diameter and tread) on dual tire installations

 

 

 

Frame and 5th Wheel

Inspect fifth wheel mounting bolts, air lines, and locks

 

 

 

 

Test operation of fifth wheel locking device

 

 

 

 

Check mud flaps and brackets

 

 

 

 

Check pintle hook and mounting

 

 

 

 

Lubricate all grease fittings

 

 

 

 

Inspect frame and frame members for cracks and damage
