Health
Literacy Pilot Project
| Advances
in medicine and changes in the delivery of
care place new demands on patients to assume
responsibility for their health. Now, more
than ever, there is a need for patients to
improve their Health Literacy skills so they
can better communicate with physicians and
health care providers.
In 2000, the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, Office of Adult Literacy (OAL) developed the Health Literacy Program to help Georgia’s adult population better navigate the health care system. The Program is designed as a gateway to adult literacy – a way to attract individuals with low literacy skills but who have not sought assistance from the adult education system. Through the use of experience-based instruction, OAL designed “To Your Health”, a health-oriented adult literacy curriculum that enhances adult learners’ ability to understand health information, ask appropriate and informed questions, and make competent health decisions. Adult learners who complete the Health Literacy Program can choose to transition into other adult literacy programs. Classes are currently being established in hospitals, clinics, community centers, senior citizen facilities, and adult literacy centers all over the state. And best of all, the classes are FREE!
