English Literacy/Civics and
Citizenship Education Program
The Department of Technical and Adult Education, Office of Adult Literacy received federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education to continue the English Literacy/Civics Education Program for a fifth year in order to meet the growing needs of Georgia's immigrant population. Twenty-one (21) technical colleges, two (2) state colleges, six (6) community-based organizations, and four (4) school systems, experienced in providing English literacy and citizenship services to immigrants and refugees, submitted successful proposals to the Office of Adult Literacy and were awarded grants to provide an integrated program of services that incorporates English literacy and civics education.
The English Literacy/Civics Education Program assists immigrants with limited English proficiency in acquiring the basic skills necessary to navigate governmental, educational, workplace, banking, healthcare, and other key American institutions. Local organizations implementing the initiative are charged with incorporating instruction on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, naturalization procedures, civic participation, and United States history and government. With the use of effective instructional practices, aspiring and recently sworn citizens will gain the skills and knowledge to become active and informed parents, workers, and community members.
The Office of Adult Literacy oversees the overall implementation and financial administration of the program, provides technical assistance and staff development, and monitors grant recipients throughout Georgia.
