Dr. Jean DeVard-Kemp From the Desk
of the
Assistant Commissioner

Dear Friends of Adult Literacy,

Welcome to the Spring Edition of Perspectives, the quarterly newsletter produced by the Technical College System of Georgia, Office of Adult Literacy. This issue focuses on volunteerism and its essential value to the Adult Literacy community.

In the fall of 1999, a development program for volunteers, called VOLITZ, was created and launched to expand recruitment, retention, recognition and to celebrate the importance of Adult Literacy programs. More than 70 percent of Service Delivery Areas in the state now sponsor volunteer participants in training and development exercises.

The final volunteer trainging session of FY2002 is scheduled for April 5. Service Delivery Areas are encouraged to register their volunteers for this exciting program. The session will be held at the Staff and Volunteer Enhancement (SAVE) Center on the Corder Road Campus of Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins. I am pleased to announce that the session will be conducted by Dr. Ola M. Brown of Valdosta, author and editor of Tips at Your Fingertips: Teaching Strategies for Adult Literacy Tutors.

The VOLITZ program continues to grow along with other Adult Literacy programs. This is due in large part to the invaluable contributions of our many advocates and especially our volunteers. The Office of Adult Literacy salutes each volunteer for their hours of dedication, the patience required to reach adult learners, and the diligence and stamina necessary to help them reach their literacy goals. The difference being made to Adult Literacy in Georgia is immeasurable and comendable. Thank you for your sustained support.

Sincerely,
Signature
Jean DeVard-Kemp
