Rural Enrollment Strategies

One of the obstacles facing adult literacyinstructors, especially those in rural areas, is increasing and maintaining student enrollment. It is difficult to address the problem of low student enrollment without addressing student recruitment first.

One of the best forms of recruiting is "word of mouth." If only a few satisfied "customers" tell others of their positive experiences with an adult literacy program, others will become more interested. However, what does one do until the masses of students flood the hollowed doors of adult education? Shelley Bowen, an adult literacy instructor in Glascock County (a county of 2300 in east central Georgia) offered the following strategies:

  • Calling names from the phone book and inquiring if anyone could benefit from the services provided by adult literacy.

  • Placing fliers in prominent locations where people gather such as a grocery store or local eatery.

  • Contacting local ministers to announce adult leaming opportunities to their congregations.

  • Advertising in local newspapers.

  • Reaching area businesses and encouraging them to distribute adult literacy information to personnel and/or employees.
