Ambassador Spotlight![]()
|
Mr. Willie Almond Jr., 1996 State Literacy Ambassador, became the first African American City Councilman in Franklin on January 2, 1998.
He has been an avid supporter of adult literacy and continues to attend classes on a regular basis. His good friend, Webster Denney, called and encouraged him to run for city councilman. Almond began knocking on the doors of West Georgia Technical Institute in LaGrange about eight years ago. Through his persistence and determination, West Georgia Technical Institute began offering literacy classes in Heard County. He has served on the Heard County Literacy Advisory Committee for four years. While serving as a state Literacy Ambassador during 1996, Almond enjoyed several opportunities and experiences. He was the guest speaker at the Leadership 2000 graduation exercises and many other functions. Almond's favorite experience was having the opportunity to meet Miss America Tara Dawn Holland. Together they discussed the importance of literacy worldwide. |
