The Assistant Commissioner

Dear Friends of Literacy,

Welcome to the Winter/Spring edition of Perspectives, the quarterly newsletter produced by the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education, Office of Adult Literacy. During FY99, the new approach has introduced the reader to a specific theme for each issue. This edition looks at the subject of Workplace Literacy. last October, the Office of Adult Literacy enjoyed a successful Workplace Literacy Conference, where Governor Zell Miller presented 116 Awards for Achievement in Workplace Learning. These awards acknowledged the efforts of more than 100 organizations committed to improving the quality of life for employees as well as the workplace environment. We are proud of their accomplishments and urge them to continue their literacy programs.

The current edition of Perspectives, which you are reading, includes submissions from the field, allowing both employees and educators an opportunity to share successful Workplace Literacy Program components. Topics include techniques and strategies designed to reach the adult learner at work and in the classroom.

By educating the workforce, employers in Georgia are experiencing an increase in the quality of work as the employees increase in basic skills. With a growing number of Georgians leaving welfare and entering the workforce, we as adult educators are making a commitment to give adult students the skills and tools necessary to succeed in today's competitive workplace environment. Thank you, employers, students, educators, and supporters for continuing to move toward a more literate Georgia.

Sincerely,

Jean DeVard-Kemp
