Make Georgia Count - It's Our Future
Why a census? Once each decade, the United States takes a census of the population. This determines political representation, allocation of government funds, and aids the government in making decisions concerning business and community matters. Georgia faces a challenge. The last time Georgia was counted in the 1990 census, it was more inaccurate than any time before. The census missed over 142,000 Georgians, half of them children. Only three states lost more money due to an inaccurate count than Georgia over the past decade. Working toward an accurate count is essential. The success of Census 2000 depends on a coordinated effort at the state and local levels. A Census 2000 Complete Count Committee is working to coordinate efforts among business, government and community organizations in Georgia. Assistant Commissioner Jean DeVard-Kemp was appointed by Governor Barnes to serve on this Committee. Getting all people in Georgia to respond will require a grass roots campaign. Adult Literacy supporters are committed to make Georgia count by encouraging students and their families to participate in the census. You can take part and help your state, your community and the students. Your Service Delivery Area can assist you. A special Georgia Census 2000 website has been created to provide more information.
