Something About McCaysville
There’s something about having a classroom in your own neighborhood that makes adult education seem less threatening. Adult learners in McCaysville have stated that they feel right at home in the Housing Authority apartment which has been converted into a cheerful classroom.
FLAG and Appalachian Tech contributed textbooks and an instructor who conducts the assessments and consults with the AmeriCorps volunteers. FLAG and Appalachian Tech loaned the program computers equipped with GED software, keyboard skills, and technical programs software.
Both FLAG and AmeriCorps are focused on Family Literacy. While parents study, volunteers work with children in small group activities such as storytelling, arts and crafts, and other learning activities.
The instructors developed reading and family activities for the parents while engaging their children in other educational activities.
The center is open for after-school tutoring, serving school age children and teens. Parents can get academic assistance through tutorial services for their children while they learn how to assist them with homework assignments.
The successful collaboration of AmeriCorps, Appalachian
Technical College, Family Connections, Fannin County Board of Education, FLAG, and the McCaysville Housing Authority is proof that everyone accomplishes more by working together.
