Temporary Assistance for
Needy Families (TANF) Program

Adult Literacy for Georgia's Temporary Assistance for
Needy Families (TANF) Program Participants

In March 1999, the Department of Technical and Adult Education, Office of Adult Literacy entered into a collaborative agreement with the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) to provide basic adult education services to TANF recipients without a high school diploma. Since inception, more than 22,000 TANF participants have been served.

The intensive literacy training and education helps adults in the TANF program acquire the necessary basic skills to become self-sufficient citizens, to compete, and to experience success in today's workplace. County DFCS offices and the New Connections to Work (NCTW) program refer TANF participants to local adult literacy programs. The Office of Adult Literacy oversees service delivery and provides training, monitoring, and technical assistance to the 37 service delivery areas.

Currently a cadre of dedicated teachers provide quality employment-focused instruction throughout the counties and service delivery areas where TANF participants are referred. Through the services provided by dedicated teachers and the commitment of DFCS and NCTW to this continuing partnership, the adults in the TANF program are earning the GED diploma, becoming job ready, and gaining employment. This program, in turn, helps to meet the needs of employers and contributes to the growing economy in Georgia.
