Board Awards Honor to Atlanta - The State Board of Technical and Adult Education has presented its 2005 Ken Breeden Award to the former Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris. The Ken Breeden Award is given annually to a leader in government, business, education or community development who has shown dedication and commitment to promoting and advancing technical education in Georgia. Governor Harris accepted the award last week from DTAE Board Chairman Ben Copeland and DTAE Commissioner Mike Vollmer during the agency’s annual Leadership Conference in Savannah. He was introduced by DTAE Board Member Steve Rieck of Jonesboro, who also served as part of Harris’ senior staff during his two terms as Governor. “Governor Harris had the vision to set forth the plan that created the technical college system of Georgia,” said Rieck. “We are proud to honor him because his leadership created a system of technical education that today is so very critical to Georgia’s workforce development.” Harris served as Georgia’s Governor from 1983 to 1991. The state Department
of Technical and Adult Education is the
state agency responsible for the governance
of Georgia's 34 technical colleges. Last
year, more than 155,000 students enrolled
in credit courses at those colleges. In
addition to managing the technical college
system, the department also administers
the state's adult literacy programs and
Georgia Quick Start, an economic development
program dedicated to workforce training. For a copy of this press release in Microsoft Word, click here. |
