REPORT TO THE CITIZENS

The Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) continues to make a significant impact in educating and training Georgia's workforce, as noted in this year's annual report. Enrollments and job placements continue to increase in record amounts, while the agency's facilities and services continue to become more far-reaching, allowing all Georgians increased opportunities for lifelong learning.

Some  highlights from DTAE's four business units include:

Adult Literacy - During calendar year 1998, 17,774 examinees were awarded GED diplomas. The Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP) continued to expand the state's adult literacy efforts. Forty-one communities have achieved participant status, while another 20 are in various stages of organizing. Enrollment in the English Literacy Program also continues to rise; it increased approximately 4.5 percent from the previous year.

Economic Development Programs - Quick Start, Georgia's economic development incentive training program, served 266 companies this year. The number ot trainees it served —  a record 33,967 — is an 8.4 percent increase from FY 98. The Economic Development Programs offices at the technical institutes served existing industries through customized training; 58,153 trainees were served in FY 99.

Public Libraries, Planning, and Technology - Of Georgia's 159 counties, 158 have public library facilities, with total holdings of more that 14.5 million items. The number of patron visits to public libraries increased this year by 10 percent to 22,550,008. The Georgia Online Database, Georgia's online interlibrary lending system, broke records with more that 154,000 items lent this year.

Technical Education - Total enrollment for FY 99 was 228,794 — 93,431 in credit and 135,363 in noncredit training courses. Interest in short-term programs which prepare workers for specific jobs continues to increase, with 18,828 students enrolled in Technical Certificate of Credit programs in FY 99. A significant indicator of our success is the placement rate of our graduates. For FY 99, of graduates available for employment, 83 percent were placed in their field, 7 percent placed out of field, and 8 percent are continuing their education.

Thank you for your interest in and support of the Department of Technical and Adult Education.
