    Georgia Claims Amazon.com

Photo of DTAE Commissioner, Dr. Kenneth Breeden and Jeff Wilke of Amazon.com Amazon.com, an online shopping site that offers electronic greeting cards, online auctions, books, CDs, toys and electronics, recently announced a training agreement with Georgia’s Quick Start program. Quick Start will train the workforce for the company’s 800,000-square-foot distribution facility in McDonough.

The training plan provides for 2,500 hours of technical and specific-skills training. Included in the plan is computer-based training for such skills as distribution-process training and workforce training for such skills as work ethics and working in teams.

“I know of no other state that does this (kind of training),” said Leigh Wilkinson, manager, logistics learning for Amazon.com. “Most state agencies come to the table with their own agenda, but Quick Start is very open. Quick Start helped the company a lot by having lengthy discussions not just about opening doors, but about building enduring relationships. That kind of openness, energy and effort really sets Quick Start apart.”

Amazon.com anticipates adding 1,000 additional jobs in Georgia by the end of 2000.   QS
