Times: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm (each of the three
days)
FDI
Description: Phase II is a three day
workshop further addressing the objectives discussed in Phase I in a practical
application format. Participants will
· develop and
deliver a 20-minute presentation
· learn new
instructional methods
· learn about web tools,
students services processes and procedures that impact teaching, and legal
issues (information provided by guest speakers).
NOTE: Participants are required to attend all
sessions to get credit for the training. If you cannot be present for all
activities, please reschedule at a more convenient time. Extenuating
circumstances will be evaluated on an individual basis at the discretion of the
instructor.
What you will
learn in Phase II:
Presentation. Participants will be asked to develop
and present a 20-minute presentation.
All presentations will be critiqued by the instructor and each class
participant for the purpose of improvement (see critique at end of syllabus).
The
preparation participants will make in the class includes selecting and
presenting one of the following types of presentations.
· A 15-20 minute
presentation on something that the participant already teaches OR
· A Brag and Drag
session OR
· A Tuning
Protocol
Details
on each type of presentation will be provided 3-4 weeks in advance of the
class. The following provides an overview of each type of presentation.
Presentation
of Something You Teach – the participant will take a lesson or activity he/she
already teaches and present it to the class. The class will ask clarifying
questions and provide feedback. The instructor is encouraged to use active
learning strategies in the presentation and not just the lecture method.
Brag and Drag – The Brag and Drag has two parts: a brag (something that is/has been working for you in the
classroom or in your program and a drag (something that hasn’t worked too well
for you). The participant will present both the brag and the drag to class;
other participants will then ask clarifying questions and provide feedback.
Tuning Protocol: Tuning a Plan – the participant will present an
activity or lesson that could be improved on (thus the name “tuning.”) After the
presentation to the class, the other participants will ask some clarifying
questions and then provide feedback.
Information for
Presentation. Prior
to attending the session, participants will need to develop a lesson plan or
an outline for the presentation. The lesson plan or outline should include a
summary of the topic, the objectives, and any other supporting materials that
you need to present the lesson. The lesson plan/outline should be handed to Dr.
Moore prior to making the presentation to the class.
Instructional
Methods. New instructional methods will be presented to and discussed with
participants.
Student Services
Information. A guest speaker
will provide information on some of the processes and procedures in student
services and how these impact the instructor and the classroom. Banner, Degree
Works and other applications will also be discussed.
Web Tools. Participants
will be shown a variety of web tools that can be used to enhance teaching. Tips
for using Angel more effectively will also be provided.
Legal Issues. A TCSG attorney
will address legal issues that instructors need to be aware of. Participants
will also be provided an opportunity to ask questions of the attorney.
Note: Each registered
participant will receive an email approximately 3-4 weeks before the session
providing him/her with the details for developing and making the presentation.
The
following form will be used to evaluate
the presentations made by participants.
Each participant will be critiqued by the instructor and by each student in the
class. Oral feedback will also be provided after each participant’s
presentation.
