ACC 159 – Accounting Simulation

Course Description:

Develops skills for the potential accountant to effectively prepare financial statements for presentations and income tax returns. Emphasis is placed on providing students with opportunities for application and demonstration of skills associated with automated accounting. Topics include: financial statement preparation, accounting system installation, automated accounting work sheet preparation, automated accounting income tax return preparation, and job search planning.

Balance Sheet	Prepare a balance sheet for presentation.
Statements	Prepare income and capital statements for presentation.
Formatting	Format all prepared letters, balance sheets, and statements for presentation.
	Prepare acknowledgement, table of contents, index and applicable appendices for presentation
Binding	Bind an accounting product for presentation.

Capacity	Verify system hardware is capable of holding accounting software program.
Features	Prepare an outline of the software program features which must be installed to support requirements.
Install software	Install software and activate features required to support accounting work tasks.
Backup procedures	Understand and use backup procedures.

Accounts charting	Using a computer-based accounting program, establish a chart of accounts.
Opening balances	Using a computer-based accounting program, enter date to establish opening balances.
Monthly transactions	Use a computer-based accounting program to code monthly reports.
End of month	Use a computer-based accounting program to generate end of month reports.
Period-end worksheets and time reports	Prepare period-end worksheets and time reports using accounting computer-based software package with “Import” and “Export” features.

Current year	Use a computer-based income tax program to prepare a tax return for the current year.
Estimated	Use a computer-based income tax program to prepare an estimated tax return for next year.

Resume	Prepare a resume which emphasizes the accounting skills gained through formal coursework and/or occupationally-based work experience.
Portfolio	Prepare a portfolio of individual products generated through coursework and/or occupationally-based work experience.
Potential employers	List employers and their job qualification which a student has met through coursework and/or occupationally-based work experience.
Interview skills	Demonstrate job application interview skills which communicates applicant job qualifications.
Goal	Prepare an occupation goal statement having one, five and ten year objectives for role in accounting field.
