Course Description

Introduces the materials and procedures involved in preparing automobile bodies for refinishing. Topics include: featheredging; masking procedures; safety procedures; surface preparation; corrosion preventative application; primers, sealers, and primer surfacer applications; and spraygun operation and maintenance.

Procedure

Demonstrate a knowledge of featheredging by sanding a broken paint area until tapered and smooth, so that no imperfection can be felt by hand.

Demonstrate skill for masking vehicle parts so that all unpainted surfaces are covered and all surfaces to be painted left fully exposed.

Demonstrate a knowledge of safety by using tools and materials according to manufacturers safety procedures.

Steps

Demonstrate and initiate ability to properly prepare a surface for sanding, priming and paint by removing all contaminants such as wax, grease, oil, etc.

Corrosion control

Demonstrate knowledge of corrosion control by properly applying a rust preventative treatment to a bare metal panel.

 

 

 

PRIMERS, SEALERS, AND PRIMER SURFACE APPLICATION

Materials

Select proper materials needed for sanding and priming a panel.

 

 

 

Mixing

Apply primer and primer surface by properly mixing and spraying primer on a properly prepared panel.

 

 

 

Types

Identify various types of paint.

 

 

 

Vehicle inspection procedure

Inspect vehicle for color code number and select appropriate paint guide.

 

 

 

 

Prepare purchase order.

 

 

 

SPRAY GUN OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Adjustments

Adjust spray gun to proper air pressure.

Adjust pattern size and material from spray gun.

 

 

 

Respiratory equipment

Describe and demonstrate proper use of respiratory safety equipment.

 

 

 

Cleaning and maintenance

Clean and maintain a spray gun by removing all evidence of material used to instructor's satisfaction. Ex. gun cap, fluid tube, etc.
