ACR 132 - Special Refinishing Application

Course Description

Provides instruction in the equipment, material, and techniques used in the application of special paints. Emphasis will be placed on automotive refinishing procedures. Topics include: safety; paint identification; base metals preparation and priming; equipment use and maintenance; color application; original finish sealing; panel and spot repair and blending; thinners, reducers, and additives; and fiberglass, plastics, and rubber refinishing.

Refinishing materials	Demonstrate and identify the correct safety procedures used in application of special refinishing materials.
PAINT IDENTIFICATION		2	2	3
Procedures	Identify and determine location of paint coding numbers, determine the type of finish each vehicle requires.
BASE METALS PREPARATION AND PRIMING		2	2	6
Procedures	Demonstrate the steps to take before preparing the surface.
	Demonstrate steps or procedures involved in preparing the surface for painting; such as cleaning, sanding, treating bare metal, and priming.
EQUIPMENT USE AND MAINTENANCE		2	2	6
Siphon systems Pressure systems	Explain and demonstrate the techniques required in equipment usage for applications and proper maintenance of siphon and pressure systems.
REFINISHING APPLICATION		2	2	6
Preparation and application	Demonstrate the proper procedures in surface preparation in refinishing interior and exterior surfaces. Identify special primers for interior refinishing.
	Demonstrate the ability to properly use and maintain all spraying equipment used in automotive refinishing.

Procedures	Apply colors in accordance with specifications.
ORIGINAL FINISH SEALING		2	2	8
Identification Specifications	Demonstrate and identify different sealers and their procedures according to manufacturer specifications.
PANEL AND SPOT REPAIR AND BLENDING		2	2	8
Panels	Demonstrate the ability to refinish a panel in metallic or solid color.
Spots	Demonstrate the ability to make a spot repair on a panel.
Blending	Demonstrate correct procedures in blending.
THINNERS, REDUCERS AND ADDITIVES		2	2	8
Thinners	Demonstrate the ability to select the proper thinner or reducer for a specific type of material.
Reducers	Identify the types of reducer and thinner--why and when it is used.
Additives	Explain why special additives are used in automotive refinishing.

Primers	Explain special primers and identify which plastic needs which refinish procedures.
Texturing	Explain texturing procedures.
	Demonstrate proper retexturing procedures.
