Course Description

Provides an orientation to the development, philosophy, responsibility, and function of the Private Security Industry.  A historical and philosophical perspective of private Security will help students better understand the present stage of private security, its principles, its legal authority and its effect on society in general.   Topics include:  Private Security: An Overview; Basic Security Goals, and Responsibilities; When Prevention Fails: Security Systems at Work: Putting It All Together, and Future Challenges Facing the Security Profession.

Describe the evolution of private security starting with the Ancient times going through the middle ages, the eighteenth and nineteenth-century England.

 

 

 

 

Explain modern private security, its purpose and objectives as well as the types of private security services and personnel needed to fill the positions.

 

 

 

 

Be able to define proprietary vs. contract services as well as the regulation of private security, private investigators and certified protection professionals.

 

 

 

 

Discuss topics of Legal Liability, elements of negligent liability, common civil lawsuits brought against private security and the civil rights act.

Describe the details of enhancing security through physical controls such as locks, alarm systems, lighting, physical layout and appearance, building exteriors and interiors and card operated locks and access.

 

 

 

 

Explain how to enhance security through procedural controls which affect shortage if not properly addressed.  In addition to hiring, training and supervision, access control, insurance and bonding.

Discuss preventing losses from accidents and emergencies and how the O.S.H.A. occupational safety and health act has impacted accident prevention. 

 

 

 

 

Define what hazardous materials incidents are and how to deal with civil disturbances, riots and strikes, ombs and bomb threats, preventing and protecting against loss by fire, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

 

 

 

 

Describe crimes and civil offenses that concern private security.  The effects of alcohol and other drugs in the workplace, enforcing proprietary rights, expelling, detaining and arresting, use of force, investigating and searching, as well as interviewing and interrogating.  The trend towards transferring police tasks to private security.

 

 

 

 

Describe the types of threats to computer security and legislation related to computer crimes.  In addition security measures and how to investigate and prosecute perpetrators.

 

 

 

 

Discuss the role of security personnel in public relations, factors involved and interaction with individuals.  Understanding one’s self and the image projected, interaction and cooperation with the press and the promotion of security.

Describe risks, and risk management, what a risk analysis and security survey show.  Selecting alternatives to handle risks, how to report the results, implementing the recommendations and evaluating the security system.

 

 

 

 

Explain the industrial security responsibilities, types of industrial losses, sabotage and espionage, vulnerable areas, transporting goods by truck, rail, and ship, special problems in the utilities industry.

 

 

 

 

Discuss retail security and how shrinkage, shoplifting, bad checks, fraudulent credit cards and retail employee theft impact profit

 

 

 

 

 

Describe the problems with shopping center/mall security and the assistance in enhancing retail security.

 

 

 

 

Describe financial institution security, office building, housing, hotel, and motel security, in addition to public gathering movie industry, recreational parks, racetracks, airport and airline mass transit and cruise ship security.

 

 

 

 

Explain hospital and other health care facilities, educational institutions, colleges and universities, libraries, museums and art galleries.
