DEN 1050 – Microbiology and Infection Control
Course Description Introduces fundamental microbiology and infection control techniques. Topics include: classification, structure, and behavior of pathogenic microbes; mode of disease transmission; body’s defense and immunity; infectious diseases; and infection control procedures in accordance with CDC recommendations and OSHA guidelines.

Disease transmission	Identify the modes of disease transmission and procedures required to prevent and/or minimize the transmission of disease in the dental office.

	Differentiate between viral systemic diseases to include herpes viruses, hepatitis, and AIDS.

Maintaining as aseptic environment	Demonstrate aseptic condition environment maintenance for dental operating equipment, clinical areas, and storage areas.

Cross-contamination	Demonstrate cross-contamination and prevention disease-transmission prevention methods at chairside by using hygiene and barrier techniques.
Chemical disinfection	Demonstrate the appropriate method of disinfection/sanitization for dental instruments, equipment, and supplies.
Mechanical sterilization	Demonstrate the appropriate methods of sterilization for dental instruments and supplies.
Instrument storage	Store all instruments providing asepsis.
	Demonstrate surgical scrub performance techniques.
Prevention of Hepatitis B	Describe the use of vaccination for the prevention of Hepatitis B.
Infection control guidelines	Identify and describe the Centers for Disease control and American Dental Association guidelines for infection control in the dental office.
