DHY 205 - Oral Pathology
Course
Description
Introduces pathology as a specialty of dentistry and
includes the etiology, pathogenesis and recognition of various pathological
conditions. Emphasis is placed on oral
and paraoral pathology and systemic conditions affecting the head and neck. Topics
include: terminology, biopsy procedures,
inflammation and repair, soft tissue and dental anomalies, pathogenesis of
caries and pulpal pathology, cysts and tumors of the head and neck, systemic
conditions, infectious diseases, diseases of the salivary glands, diseases of
bone, blood dyscrasias, vesiculo-erosive diseases, and genetic diseases of the
head and neck.

colleagues and other dental professionals utilizing appropriate terminology. Describe
the purpose of a biopsy. Describe

inflammation, types of inflammation, the cells involved, their function the
“cardinal signs” of inflammation. Describe
the hemodynamic events involved in the inflammatory process. Define

the results if inflammation or repair deviates from that normally expected. |

the terms cyst, pseudocyst, odontogenic cyst, developmental and fissural cysts. Discuss

the treatment of various cysts and sequelae of untreated cysts. Define
and odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumors. Define
benign vs. malignant tumors. Describe
the clinical and radiographic appearance of various odontogenic and
non-odontogenic tumors. Discuss
the various etiologies of odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumors. Discuss
the treatment of odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumors and sequelae if left

oral structures. Define,
name and describe hypo- and hyperfunction of the adrenal glands and their
