WRITING

Prewriting

Use varied strategies for gathering and developing ideas.

 

 

 

Organization

Apply strategies for organizing ideas; differentiating between main ideas and supporting details; and examples and comparisons.

 

 

 

 

Paragraph writing

 

Know and apply varied strategies for writing introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Paragraphs must be unified, coherent, and well-developed.

 

 

 

Transitions

Use transitions between ideas and paragraphs.

 

 

 

Essay writing

Write logically organized essays using varied patterns of development that contain a clearly implied or stated thesis statement, well-developed body paragraphs, and an effective conclusion.

 

 

 

Using other sources

Use secondary sources to support writing with emphasis on responsible, effective use of secondary sources and avoiding plagiarism.

 

 

 

 

Write at least one essay incorporating ideas from reading material, with emphasis on the responsible and appropriate use of those sources.
