Provides instruction in advanced lathe operations and procedures. Emphasis is placed on skill development through laboratory experiences. Topics include: eccentric turning, special setups, tolerance turning, and safety.

ECCENTRIC TURNING |

|
Setup |
Describe independent chunks and the types of work they are designed to be used for. |

Center workpieces in a four jaw chuck using a cutting bit in the tool post, a dial indicator, and a wiggler. |

Application |
Complete the following operations at specified points on a square workpiece: center drill, drill holes of specific size, cut internal threads, ream, counter bore, countersink, and bore over sized holes. |

SPECIAL SETUPS

Define mandrel turning, follower and steady rest, and milling and grinding on the lathe. |

|

|
Explain form turning and demonstrate tool grinding techniques. |
|
|

Prepare the lathe and a workpiece for turning using a mandrel, follower rest, steady rest, milling, and grinders. |
|

|
Explain the use of a hydraulic tracing attachment. |
|
|
|
|
|
Demonstrate using cut off tool. |

TOLERANCE TURNING
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Explain tolerance, actual size, given size, unilateral tolerance, types of fit, and where specifications for tolerance and fit can be found. |

|
|
Demonstrate the ability to turn to tolerance size, and locate features on a round workpiece and eccentric features on a square workpiece. |
