MEN 103 – Marine Four-Stroke Engine Fundamentals and Servicing

Course Description

Introduces basic concepts of four-stroke engine theory and servicing. Topics include: four-stroke engine fundamentals, cylinder head and valve train servicing, short block servicing, and block repair methods.

Operation	Explain the basic principles of marine four-stroke cycle internal combustion engine operation.
Identification	Identify types of four-stroke cycle engines.
CYLINDER HEAD AND VALVE TRAIN SERVICING		7	7	15
Servicing	Diagnose, inspect, and service cylinder head and valve train problems.
Timing	Perform four cycle engine valve timing procedures.
BLOCK SERVICING		8	6	9
Servicing	Diagnose, inspect, and service camshafts, lifters, timing chain, sprockets, and gears.
	Diagnose, inspect, and service cylinder block; crankshaft; and rod and piston assemblies, bearings, and seals.

Methods	Explain block repair methods including honing, boring, and sleeving.
Salvaging	Explain and apply basic block salvaging procedures.
