Course Description

This course focuses on communication, supervision, and organizations in the age of technology.  It builds on the basic computer skills introduced in SCT 100 using computer-based technology to develop skills in applying information technology.  The student will create written, verbal, and electronic communication applied to supervisory functions in the work place.  Topics include: internet applications, word processing applications; spreadsheet applications; database applications; presentation technology and applications; graphical interface applications; interpersonal communications; group communications and team building; organizational communications; and global, intercultural, and ethical issues in communicating.

Basic Dimensions of the Communication Process

 

Describe the challenges of communicating in today’s business environment.

 

Describe the behavioral and process models of communication.

 

Identify the objectives of communication

 

Describe the barriers to communication and the methods to overcome those barriers.

 

Discuss the principles of effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication.

 

Explain the contingency approach to media selection.

 

 

 

 

Interpersonal Communication

Contrast the assertive, aggressive, and nonassertive communication styles.

 

Discuss the primary sources of both nonverbal communication and listener comprehension.

 

Identify three different listening styles, and review the keys to effective listening.

 

Demonstrate the principles of conducting and receiving an employment interview.

 

Explain the principles of producing a performance appraisal document and a performance appraisal interview.

 

Summarize the principles of effective oral communication and utilize the principles in short presentation(s).

 

Demonstrate the principles of producing effective goals and objectives.

 

 

 

 

Organizational communication

Discuss the patterns of hierarchical communication (Formal) and the "grapevine" (Informal).

 

Demonstrate your familiarity with four antecedents of communication distortion between managers and employees.

 

Describe the process, personal, physical, and semantic barriers to effective communication.

 

 

 

 

Group Communication and Team Building

Identify key characteristics of effective group communication.

 

Contrast task roles with maintenance roles.

 

Explain how a work group becomes a team.

 

Identify the four general types of work teams.

 

Identify the three components of teamwork that receive the most credit in sports and business.

 

Discuss the cultural implications of interpersonal space, language and religion.

 

Prepare and deliver a group presentation utilizing the principles of effective presentation, and a complete range of the tools of presentation technology.

Discuss the cultural implications of interpersonal space, language and religion.

 

Compare and contrast cultures in the United States and other cultures and the impact on communication for intercultural communication in a global environment.

Navigate the internet and world-wide web.

Utilize personal Email to communicate with course participants and instructor, including submitting course assignments as Email attachments.

 

Utilize online resources to conduct a job search.

Computer Concepts Review

Explain the difference between computer literacy and information literacy.

 

Understand the productivity relationship between Systems Software and Application Software. 

 

Explain how web browser search tools, e-mail and other Internet services help one communicate and access information.

 

 

 

 

Graphical Interface Applications

Have a functional understanding of Microsoft Windows, which is the most widely used graphical user interface application for personal computers.  Windows is the GUI for MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.

 

Utilize software applications for presentations, reports and proposals including charts and graphs, tables, flowcharts, and other graphic aids.

 

 

 

 

Word processing

Use Microsoft Word as a communications tool to satisfy requisite documentation projects that include the use of tables, graphics, pictures, and/or require internet, intranet, or e-mail capabilities for delivery.

 

Utilize good form construction of business communications including Email, memos, and business letters across a range of applications.

 

Produce a personal resume and cover letter in application for employment.

 

 

 

 

Spreadsheet and Database

Use Excel in practical spreadsheet situations that require the use of formulas, formatting, charting, what-if-analysis, other functions, and/or Web queries.

 

Discuss applications in managing, organizing, and analyzing data.

 

Use Excel to create a database (records and fields), sort a database on more than two fields, access and display all records meeting specific criteria parameters.

 

Produce a spreadsheet application for a work and/or production schedule.

 

Utilize spreadsheet application by producing a sample financial budget.

 

 

 

 

Presentation Technology

A basic understanding of how to use PowerPoint as a presentation tool and to foster an appreciation for the utility of this tool in the work place.

 

Apply this understanding in the development of a PowerPoint presentation of a topic in the area of communication.
