OPD 117 – Contact Lens Review

Course Description

This course continues students’ study of contact lens dispensing knowledge skills. Emphasis is placed on reviewing types of contact lenses, fitting techniques, and further development of associated skills. Topics include: soft contact lens fitting; hard contact lens fitting; contact lens instrumentation; effective consumer service; and contact lens regulations.

	Interpret and record keratometry readings.
Lens wear options	Discuss soft contact lens wear options with customer.
Determine lens type and style	Select soft contact lens material and design.
	Conduct a diagnostic soft contact lens evaluation.
	Determine soft contact lens parameters.
	Order soft contact lens.
Customer instruction	Verify soft contact lens parameters.
	Evaluate initial fit of soft contact lenses.
	Instruct customer in proper wear of soft contact lenses.
	Schedule follow-up evaluation of soft contact lenses.
Follow-up visit	Determine customer's level of satisfaction and adjustment to soft contact lenses.
	Observe fit of customer's soft contact lenses.
	Evaluate need for change in soft contact lens material or design.
	Make modifications/alterations to original soft contact lens order. Order modified/altered soft contact lenses.
	Reinforce care and storage procedures for soft contact lenses
	Refer customer to prescriber.

Slit lamp	Focus and select suitable illumination of the slit lamp.
	Use slit lamp to evaluate cornea, conjunctiva, tear film, and eyelid.
Keratometer	Calibrate a keratometer.
	Use a range extension for the keratometer.
	Focus the keratometer and locate cylinder axis.
	Measure horizontal and vertical meridian using a keratometer
	Determine degree and type of astigmatism using a keratometer.
Radioscope	Use a radioscope to detect presence of contact lens warpage.
	Verify base curve of a contact lens using a radioscope.
Lensometer	Use a lensometer to verify contact lens power, cylinder power, and axis and prism.
Special application instruments	Verify the accuracy of the thickness gauge and use it to measure a contact lens.
	Verify the accuracy of the diameter gauge and use it to measure a contact lens.
	Verify the accuracy of the hand loop with mm grid and use it to measure a contact lens.
	Verify the accuracy of the shadow graph and use it to measure a contact lens.
	Verify the accuracy of the photoelectric keratoscope and use it to measure a contact lens.
Instrumentation techniques	Use the overhead light refraction technique.
	Use the dioptric and vertex conversion charts.
	Use fluorescein evaluation techniques.
Special tests	Perform Schirmer's tests #1 and #2.
	Perform the rose bengal evaluation.
	Perform the tear break-up test.

Lens selection	Assess customer's need for particular lens material and design.
Lens certification	Verify parameters of lenses in accordance with Z80 ANSI standards.
Wear instruction	Educate contact lens customer on all aspects of wear including cleaning and storage procedures.
Evaluation	Use appropriate diagnostic and instrumentation procedures to evaluate initial fit of contact lens.
Follow-up	Schedule subsequent appointments for determining customer's safe and satisfactory wear of contact lenses.
	Perform follow-up interview to determine customer's safe and satisfactory wear of contact lenses.
	Observe lens fit during follow-up visit using instruments, diagnostic tools, and empirical methods.
	Determine the need to modify or alter customer's contact lenses.
	Order modified or altered contact lenses as determined during follow-up visit of customer.
Care and handling	Reinforce the proper care and handling of contact lenses during customer's follow-up visits.
