PLB 100 –Introduction to Construction and the Pipe Trades

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the construction trades, the skills required to succeed in construction, tools, and job site safety. This course also provides certification in CPR and First Aid. Topics include: introduction to the construction trades; ethics, communication, and attitudes; use and care of hand and power tools; job site safety; and CPR and first aid.

	Explain the history and nature of the plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and masonry trades.

USE AND CARE OF HAND AND POWER TOOLS		6	0	0
Use of tools	Identify basic tools used in the pipe trades.
Demonstrate use of tools	Demonstrate tool safety.
	Demonstrate care and maintenance of tools.
	Identify the types of materials each tool may be used with.
	Explain where each tool or piece of equipment would be used.
	Cut copper tubing with a tubing cutter and a hacksaw.
	Cut plastic pipe with an all purpose saw, tubing cutter, scissor cutter, a reciprocating saw and a chop saw.
	Cut steel pipe with power pipe cutter, reciprocating saw, band saw and hand pipe cutter.
	Cut cast iron pipe with snap type chain cutter, reciprocating saw, and hammer and chisel.
	Demonstrate proper use of vises and clamps.
JOB SITE SAFETY		2	0	0
	Describe the safety clothing that is worn on construction jobs.
	Describe proper safety procedures used when working with ladders, scaffolding, power tools, and around electrical service.
	Describe and demonstrate proper lifting techniques for heavy objects.
	Describe proper safety precautions when using torches and welding equipment.
	Describe proper techniques for working in confined spaces.

CPR	Recognize and respond to medical emergencies, and how to manage the medical emergencies until professional help arrives.
	Describe assessment of an unresponsive victim.
First aid	Describe a 911 and “in house team.”
	Describe adult CPR (ventilation and chest compression).
	Describe rescue breathing.
	Describe conscious choking.
	Describe unconscious choking.
	Describe control emotions.
