Course Description

Emphasizes rehabilitation techniques and neurophysiological approaches to treatment. Topics include: neurological rehabilitation, spinal rehabilitation, amputees, prosthetics, and orthotics.

NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION		8	6	0
Definitions	Define terms associated with the pathology and management of CVA.
Etiology and assessment	Describe the etiology and physiology of a stroke.
	Describe assessment techniques commonly associated with a stroke.
Rehabilitative techniques	Describe the rehabilitative techniques for stroke patients including PNF techniques, NDT techniques, Brunstrom, Swiss gymnastic ball, and road techniques.
	Apply the above listed rehabilitation techniques in the lab.
SPINAL REHABILITATION		11	7	0
Definitions	Define paraplegic, quadraplegic, paraparetic, and quadraparetic.
Etiology	Describe the etiology of spinal cord injury (SCI).
Signs and symptoms	List the clinical signs and symptoms of SCI.
Levels of SCI	Explain the functional significance of the various levels of SCI including reference to muscle strength.
Precautions/Treatments	Discuss the precautions to take with spinal cord patients regarding skin care, prevention of contractures, bladder care, respiratory care, and edema.
	Define orthostatic hypotension and explain how it relates to SCI.
	Develop and demonstrate appropriate exercises after reading a physical therapy evaluation.
	Explain the purpose of each exercise and how it related to progressing patient towards maximum level of independence regarding strength, mobility, and ADL activities
	Identify various architectural barriers for the wheelchair patient.

Amputation process	Identify indications for amputation.
	Describe types of surgical amputation.
	Discuss the levels of upper extremity amputation as related to function.
	List problems encountered with upper and lower extremity amputations.
Functional significance levels	List indications for amputation.
	Explain the functional significance of various levels of amputation.
Treatment and care of amputees	Discuss the physical therapy management of the amputee patient pre-operatively, post-operatively, pre-prosthetically, and post-prosthetically.
	Demonstrate exercises for above the knee (AK) and below the knee (BK) amputee including gait training.
	Identify common gait deviations seen in AK and BK amputees and discuss ways to correct the deviations.
	Explain potential complications of the amputee's stump.
	Explain the importance of good stump hygiene and care.
	Perform proper stump wrapping techniques for the AK and BK in the laboratory.
Psycho-social problems	Describe phantom sensation/pain and list the causes.
	Discuss the psycho-social problems of the amputee patient.
