Program Executive Summary

The Early Childhood Care and Education Basics technical certificate program provides the basic knowledge for individuals entering the child care field with knowledge of providing a safe and healthy environment, detecting and reporting child abuse, disease control measures, basic human growth and development, developmentally appropriate practices, and balancing the daily schedule. This program will provide students with the basic skills needed to work in a child care setting including an overall perspective of the field. Employment potential exists in the child care center classroom (must be 18 years old to be the lead teacher), open and operate a family child care home (must be 21 years old), or become an assistant teacher in a Georgia Pre-K classroom in a child care center. This program is institutionally developed and not offered at adjacent colleges. As required courses are already offered through existing ECE programs, start-up costs are projected to be modest and limited to equipment and supplies, funded through local tuition revenue. Because this TCC curriculum is embedded in existing programs and the program could also be offered through dual enrollment, projected enrollment is expected to be 50 students the first year and growing to 200 graduates by the third year.
